I​-​Ling & Ivan Chew - So She Said (Vox Humana 2019)

I-Ling is a longtime friend and music collaborator on the Starfish Stories :: The Band projects. For this track, she'd recorded her vocals way back in 2010 after I sent her an arrangement (initially titled Vox Humana). I did a rough demo with the vocals she came up with in 2010 but gradually forgot about it. Work and life caught up.

It would have remained forgotten if not for my rooting around the hard drive and discovering the rough demo.

There was a moment of panic when I couldn't retrieve her solo vocal stems. I-Ling had recorded it in GarageBand and I'd converted it to Logic 9 back then. The old file could be opened and converted to the current Logic Pro version but the vocal samples were missing. Luckily I managed to find backup versions hidden away. Phew.

I-Ling came up with the original words and melody. I'd passed her the piano-based arrangement, she recorded the vocals at home and emailed the file to me. I've largely kept to her vocal sequence and only dropped a small spoken part.

In a way, I'm glad I took so long. I'm still far from being with the audio mastering pros but there's considerable improvements to my mixing and mastering repertoire and the software is several leaps better. I'm sure I'll find parts that I want to make better as I listen over time. For now though, I'm loving this song and really full of gratitude for my early music collaborator friends.
