Wellerman Comes (ft. Minwen)

Inspired by the “Tik Tok Wellerman” phenomenon of 2021, I decided to try my hand at an interpretation of the song. Together with my long-time singer friend, Minwen, we came up with what we hope is a listenable tune that conveys a story.

People call the original a Sea Shanty. To my ears I hear a sad ballad in it. The words reminded me of scenes from the novel, Moby Dick. Elements of this is also in the cover art (more on that, below).

Like the original sea shanty, our version is also about a whaling vessel and its supply ship (the Wellerman). But the whaling crew has been lost at sea, its vessel now a Ghost Ship. They sing of their supply boat that will never ever come for them, a hope that will never be realised. OK, if that's too bleak, then there's also the hope their story will be discovered one day and their souls released :)
