Ballad of Black Butterflies Stanza 1: She was the Queen of the Night Singing her song of the moon It was blue, cold and barren Her voice cut like a shard As the dark song unfurled It fluttered and soared Across the heart of a boy Who wept his nectar of tears ~ Chorus: There, as he laid on the ground Black butterflies bleeding There, as he laid on the ground In the dark of nothing Here, as we lay on the ground Black butterflies bleeding Here, as we lay on the ground Black butterflies singing ~ [Repeat Stanza 1] Bridge: The glass of her voice Flies through the flowering fields A trellis of sorrow A wilted shivering rose Oh Black Butterfly Embroider your baroque Flutter your wings ~ [Repeat Chorus x 2]

Dear Melancholy Heart, I purchased some DVDs the other day, thinking I could run through this torrent of sadness with a numb mind. It didn't work though. Flipped through the radio channels, looking for some solace from a pop star somewhere, but I finished a boxful of tissues instead. I actually thought I could get somewhere and not be missed and be out of touch, but then the bills found me and had your name on it. I think I left a bottle of whiskey lying where it shouldn't be. Walked up the stairs, along the grey corridors, and spied some neighbours through their open doors, having dinner or catching some TV show, always with someone. I turned away and looked the other way, looked over the ledge at times, and clenched my fists most times. This loneliness is as stark as the day you left. Sometimes I remember some golden moment we had, touching me at the edges of my mind. But most times, I remember the other days that were not as golden, that made me and you turn away, from this, from everything. I wonder what you are doing, what you are thinking, what you're eating, what you miss. Not that it matters. No, it shouldn't matter. Forget it. Please. I hope you don't receive this letter, and I hope it gets lost.

Rain On Everything [VERSE] The rain is falling The rain is falling On everything It's on everything
On the rooftop, the river On the seashore That quivers On everything
 ~ [CHORUS]
Sand in my shoes
Blistered and bloodied My footprints are deep
With no one to carry me Sand in my soul I'm blistered and bloodied My footprints are deep Because no one is carrying me ~ [Repeat VERSE] On everything ~ [Break]
I walk quietly
Trying not to scream Not to disturb
The sleeping doves ~ [Repeat CHORUS] [Repeat VERSE] On everything On everything On everything On everything

about

A collaborative music project by Minwen, Lynn Dresel, and Ivan Chew. Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike license.

This 4-track album is a hobbyist project by friends, for friends. We started by giving ourselves (well, Boon and Lynn) a 30-minute Song Writing Challenge. What followed was a purposeful collaborative process: an overall aim in mind with a dash of serendipity.

The vocal tracks were recorded with DIY consumer-grade home recording equipment: dynamic mics recorded into Macs in less than ideal sound settings. Vocals were recorded in individual homes and sent as a GarageBand file. Music arrangement, mixing and mastering was on Logic Pro X on a Mac Mini. Coordination was over WhatsApp. Thank you, modern tech.

Our musical backgrounds, training and exposure (or lack of) vary a lot. Our reactions to the music we created was similar though: a sense of wonder that we could produce these pieces. Individually, we wouldn't be able to achieve this.

We're not sure if you'll enjoy the songs as we do. If you have, then we're grateful. Hope you'll enjoy the same joy we had in creating this.
