Mohd Ridhwan, Minwen, Ivan Chew - Here's to Goodbyes

Ridhwan and I connected through music several years back, specifically through Creative Commons, where he'd used one of my tracks for his side-band album. We stayed in touch after that, especially since we shared an interest in electric guitars (if a guitar collection shows the extent of one's interest, Ridhwan wins hands down!)

In Dec 2018, we started toying with the idea of collaborating on a musical idea. The idea was simple, though challenging to pull off: he'd attempt to write original lyrics for a song in one sitting; I'd compose/ create an arrangement based on his words. The result is "Here's to Goodbyes", completed by Minwen on vocals.

I wasn't sure if Ridhwan would appreciate this arrangement, with the twinkly piano and classical strings part (he's a Punk/ Alternative music fan). He said he liked it though.

This song isn't about the end of things, though it acknowledges that all things have to end. I see it as how we have a choice to live in a manner that when we finally have to say our goodbyes, it will be in peace and gratitude. The second line says it all: "To always look for signs that light our darkest nights".

It's fitting that this song closes this album, at a period where nations and individuals are trying their absolute best to hang on, trying to maintain normalcy while living out Stay Home orders in extended periods - discovering the worse and best of ourselves, rediscovering what it means to simply be.
