about

First instrumental post-rock inspired track for 2021. Hat-tip to a long-time pal, Marvin, for bouncing ideas and feedback on this track.

I texted him (yes, we semi-old fogeys use old-fogey words like dude):

"Dude, suggest four chords for me & I'll go make a song."
"G C Bm F..."
"OK, now gimme three words."
"Love Sex Robots... no wait. lol. Cold Black Sea. Shrug. When I see the cold black sea, I shrug. I always shrug."

I took the "Shrug" to mean "shake off" or "brush off something". As I put this piece together, it was the seasonal monsoon with unusually heavy rains. Cold and dark was apt. It was easy to imagine the seas pouring down.

From the G/C/Bm/F combo, I made Bm the key and went from there:
Bm G A F#m
G Em Bm D{A)

The first draft had a violin section, but I dropped that to make the guitar as the central instrument. Extended the end after Marvin said the initial draft's ending was too abrupt.

He asked if I had an orchestra in my cupboard.

No dude.

Happy jamming, Marv.
